Assistant Director, Marketing & Informal Recreation, SRWS The University of Akron Akron, OH Working within the Division of Student Affairs in the Student Recreation and Wellness Services department, the Assistant Director, Marketing & Informal Recreation provides leadership to the operations of aquatics and informal recreation and associated programs including special events and facility rentals. They develop, manage, and implement all department marketing efforts for programs and services. The Assistant Director develops and manages student membership staff and membership program. This position provides direct supervision to two full-time professionals, and direct and/or indirect supervision to over 100 student employees. They support the coordination of daily operation of all SRWS facilities. Responsibilities: - Provide development and supervision to the Manager, Aquatic Facilities and Coordinator, Informal Recreation.
- Hire, train, develop, and evaluate the student staff for marketing, design, outreach, photographer/videographers, and membership office.
- Manage all department marketing and promotion including print, digital, and electronic media insuring proper promotion of operations and services. This includes outreach events and sponsorship programs.
- Develop, review, and update SRWS membership structure, pricing, promotion and sales identifying new membership opportunities and exploring opportunities to engage under-represented categories. Creating new opportunities for revenue.
- Work seamlessly in membership sales operation and manages the staffing and sales responsibilities of all memberships.
- Work with the office of Student Conduct and Community Standards regarding patron conduct concerns and referrals.
- Work with the Dean of Students office on CARE team referrals and other student related issues.
- Provide customer service and work to resolve patron issues working with multiple departments serving as the department liaison to students, campus, and community.
- Serve on the department senior leadership team to develop strategic initiatives and departmental planning.
- Develop and maintain Supervisor in Training program, annual training calendar, and skill evaluations for the development of staff to meet (ARC) and exceed industry standards.
- Support the training and development of approximately 100 student staff positions in informal recreation and aquatics.
- Manage Rec Works hiring program for all operational areas.
- Assist with facility schedule review and supervision of special programs/events within recreation facilities and campus wide. Maintain open recreational space 100% of the time facilities are open.
- Support the supervision and event staffing for aquatic swim meets and meet management.
- Update, and refine policies and procedures for SRWC, Buchtel Field, and Central Hower based on standard and industry operating procedures.
- Serve as a liaison to academic units, university departments, and community patrons to properly advice on facility use during non-peak hours of recreational use. Maintaining and communicating procedures for use.
- Support membership sales, guest pass sales, Pro Shop sales, and related fiscal policies and procedures including sourcing and inventory of retail items.
- Operate facility/membership management software.
- Design and deliver student training and development opportunities that align with industry best practices and increase student buy-in.
- Assist in development, implementation and assessment of operations and programs, as well as developing and maintaining long range and short term financial goals and plans.
- Develop program yearly budget, tracking and reporting, compiling revenue information on a per-session, semester, and fiscal year basis. Monitor expenditures and payroll to meet budget goals.
- Assist in operation of SRWS facilities, policy and procedure management, and special event management.
- Assist with inspections and upkeep of facilities under Student Recreation and Wellness Services, identifying maintenance needs and submitting repair requests as needed.
- Work with the Department of Student Recreation & Wellness Services to support its mission of providing high quality programming, engaging and developing students in a manner that enhances their ability to be successful, adding to the campus experience and representing The University of Akron to the highest standards.
- Works a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
Required Qualifications: - A relevant Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in collegiate recreation.
- Marketing and promotion experience.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage time efficiently and prioritize tasks.
- Computer skills:
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- CSI (Daxko Spectrum Management System) or similar facility/membership management software experience
- Supervisory experience of professional staff and students.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work a non-traditional work week (i.e. before 8am & after 6pm plus weekend hours).
- Experience with large special events including recreation, athletic, and community events.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice and cultural competence, and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
- American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor certification (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire)
Preferred Qualifications: - Master degree in Sports Administration, Recreation or related field.
- Membership promotion and sales experience.
- Graphic design experience.
- Basic accounting skills.
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification.
- When to Work or similar employee scheduling software experience.
- Experience with time management systems for swim meets.
